Torque wrenches

Torque wrenches

When tightening nuts and bolts that may be subject to tension, it is wise to use a torque wrench. A torque wrench tightens a bolt or nut with a pre-set torque (torque force). The importance of using the torque wrench lies in the tension that can occur afterwards. For example, over-tightening a bolt with a regular wrench can cause it to break. However, the torque wrench never over-tightens or over-loosens the bolt. A bolt is at its strongest when plastic deformation has not yet occurred. That sounds complicated but is actually very simple. Steel is like an elastic band, when you pull it it wants to spring back, so the bolt presses everything firmly. If a bolt is tightened too much, plastic deformation occurs, just like an elastic band that is stretched too far; it doesn't bounce back anymore. After plastic deformation, the bolt is weakened and brittle because metal fatigue occurs. That's why it's good to use a torque wrench.
